Recorded history of Cranfield dates back to 998 and was then referred to as Cranfeldinga. The name changed many times over the years to what we know today as Cranfield. The name is derived from the Anglo-Saxon "feld" meaning "open clearing surrounded by trees" . There were a lot of ponds around Cranfield, some were on our school grounds and many still exist today. These ponds were frequented by Cranes so giving us "Cran"- Cran-Feld. *
At Cranfield V.C. Lower School we have the Crane as our school logo.
The School was founded in 1865 to provide education according to the principles and practices of the Church of England. This school remains legally owned by the Trustees of its Church of England Foundation, but is now controlled by the Local Education Authority, which has accepted full financial responsibility for its maintenance. The Church remains represented on the Governing Body, thus fostering links between the School, the Church and the local community.
This beautiful tapestry of the Crane, our school logo, was hand stitched by a past teacher,
Miss Thurstance.
